Easter tyre safety warning from NRMA

How is the condition of your car tyres? It's quite possible they aren't as good as you think!

And with the Easter holiday coming up, now may be an important time to have a quick tyre maintenance check.

A new survey conducted by NRMA Motoring and Services found that one in five cars had dangerous wear on at least one of their tyres.

Many others were found to have incorrect tyre pressure. The NRMA released a statement today (March 26) reminding drivers of the importance of tyres to road safety.

NRMA senior policy advisor Jack Haley said that with many heading away this weekend likely to be driving on high speed roads, checking tyres before heading out needs to be a priority.

"Tyres must be regularly inspected for wear, inflation levels and damage," said Mr Haley, adding that many motorists may be oblivious to the danger they could be in.

Even when tyres are only slightly under or over inflated, performance can suffer and lead to poor steering, reduced road grip and uneven wear.

However it doesn't take much effort to check the condition of your tyres, and it's even easier to ensure they have the right air pressure, according to Mr Haley.

"It's a no-brainer really, it's free to put air in tyres, it just requires a couple of extra minutes of time after you fill up."
