With CommSec predicting that the price of petrol will remain high throughout the holidays - and with many drivers taking to the roads to visit loved ones over the Christmas and New Year period - it may be time to start thinking about how you can get around more efficiently in 2014.

Fortunately for drivers, there are a lot of quick tips and tricks to follow to cut down on your vehicle's fuel consumption. As with many things, prevention is better than the cure, so by taking matters like the quality of your car tyres into consideration, you can drive more efficiently all year long.

Regularly checking your tyre pressure is a great way to save some money on petrol - Canadian figures from the Alberta Motor Association suggest that tyres that are even just slightly under-inflated by as little as eight PSI can increase your fuel consumption considerably.

A good strategy is to examine your car tyres at least once a month when they are cold - that is to say, that they haven't been driven on in at least half an hour.

Inspecting your tyres regularly for general wear and tear, tread depth and other factors can also help to keep your car running smoothly on the road. If you aren't sure what to look for, book an appointment with an expert.
