Travel to the best New Year's Eve parties in Australia

If you're already getting fed up of Christmas advertising and carols, it's time to shift your attention towards one of the biggest nights of the year - New Year's Eve!

For those who haven't planned out where they'll be to ring in 2014, here's a rundown of the best celebrations around Australia. Pack your bags, check your car tyres are in tip top shape (after all, the quickest way to ruin a holiday is by having an accident) and load up your car with your best friends for a road trip to the party of a lifetime.


With its own website counting down the minutes until the big event, Sydney New Year's Eve is set to be one of the biggest around the nation. The pinnacle of the night will be the midnight fireworks from Sydney Harbour Bridge, but there's plenty of activity in the lead up to that.

From 6pm there'll be aerial aerobics above the Sydney Harbour, followed by a fire tug water display and then an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander smoking ceremony for a touch of culture. At 9 p.m. there'll be a family fireworks display, perfect for little ones struggling to keep their eyes open. For the adults, there'll be a spectacular 12-minute display at midnight to celebrate 2014.


If you've got Melbourne in your sights, head to Kings Domain between St Kilda and the Yarra river for the official party venue. The Flagstaff and Treasury gardens will also come alive with excitement, along with the Docklands.

A family fireworks display will be held at Yarra Park from 9:30pm, and there will be further displays and free entertainment until 2am!

Many bars and restaurants are hosting their own celebrations in Melbourne, including the Royal Melbourne Hotel's Carnivalesque party. It's Melbourne's first indoor carnival and will feature a fire dancer, burlesque entertainers and circus acts.


For those looking for a touch of glamour, check out Brisbane's "I Wish I Was" New Year's Eve ball held at the RNA Showgrounds. Capitol Groove, Booster and The Full House Band will entertain guests with a wide variety of music, plus there'll be plenty of rides and attractions for the more adventurous guests.

The all inclusive ticket price includes delicious treats and beverages, and you're bound to meet some new friends to celebrate with!

Alternatively, head to the South Bank parklands for live music, an all-ages dance party, amazing fireworks displays and even a fairground for you to try your luck.


Those in South Australia should head to Elder Park for dazzling fireworks shooting off Victoria Bridge. There will also be lots of fun at Victor Harbour and the seaside town of Beachport.

If you're interested in a classy affair to remember, head to the Stamford at Glenelg for a sit-down three course dinner, or perhaps a seafood buffet dinner. You'll be perfectly positioned to enjoy the midnight fireworks with your loved ones.


Head to the East Perth Foreshore for the widely acclaimed NYE on the Foreshore party held by Nokturnl Events. Starting at 6 p.m. and running until 2 a.m. on January 1, this is a perfect event for singles and couples alike to celebrate in style. The dress code is cocktail however the weather is expected to be very warm, so make sure you're comfortable!

Local bands and DJs will entertain crowds with a mixture of pop, hip hop and electronica, so make sure you're wearing your dancing shoes. There'll be plenty of premium beers, wines, spirits and cocktails to quench your thirst, too!
