Looking on taking your littlies on the road? Concerned about how to keep them busy and entertained so you can focus on the direction your new car tyres are taking you?

While you could consider investing in the modern technology such as back seat DVD players or hand held consoles, these can be noisy and distracting. Instead, why not consider using some old favourites to keep your children behaving like angels? Here are some traditional car games you might have played as a nipper.

I Spy

This one is a classic for a reason! All you need to do is think if something obscure that is either inside or outside of your vehicle. Let the kids know what letter it starts with and voila! Free and easy entertainment that has withstood the test of time.

The animal game

This is a  game that will keep you on your toes. The first person needs to come up with an animal and the next person then comes up with an animal that starts with the last letter of the first animal's name. For instance, if the first person said tiger the next could say rabbit and so on.

Name that tune

Get someone to hum a well known song. Whoever is first to guess what it is, wins!

Memory tester

In this game you can pretend you are purchasing parts for your car in alphabetical order. Since this is a memory builder, you will need to repeat the list and add a new item. For instance, the first player may say "I went on a road trip and the car needed air bags" the next person will say "I went on a road trip and the car needed air bags and brakes" and so on. Remember if you forget one, you're out!

Tunnels

Test your children to see how long they can hold their breaths for in the tunnel. This game can also be played over bridges. For best results, tell a joke halfway through and watch them squirm as they try not to let go of their breath.

Story telling

As you drive, one person can start telling a story and each consecutive person adds a line until the story is over. This is bound to create some laughs as you see what the kids can come up with!

If you have older children, you could even see if they could make sure the story rhymes. This will add an extra layer to the game, making it a little tougher.

Who am I?

This is a great game that can really pass the time when you're out on the roads. All you need to do is think of a person - whether it be someone you know personally or a favourite celebrity - then let everyone ask you questions until someone has worked out who you are. Then its their turn! The more obscure the person, the longer the game will take.

Other car tips to ensure the trip goes smoothly

These are some great games to enjoy on the road. However, where kids are concerned you will need to be prepared for anything. To make sure they are happy on your trip, ensure you also have plenty of snacks available as well as plastic bags in case of car accidents.

Before you leave you should also make sure you have a first aid kit prepared as you ever know what could happen. It will also pay to make sure your car is maintained and ready for the pressures of the journey. Double check your car tyres to make sure they are in a good condition. Look out for any wear that could make them dangerous and ensure the tread is within legal limits. It would also pay to make sure they are inflated to the manufacturer's recommendations as this will improve your journey.
