The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has issued a safety and compliance alert - the first in the organisation's history.

If you drive a heavy vehicle with truck tyres, it is important to follow the important and practical advice offered by the NHVR. This comes on the heels of a recent fatal fuel tanker crash in country Victoria, according to a September 12 VicRoads press release.

"Our advice to operators who are working with dog trailers, pig trailers and road train dollies is that they should read this safety advice closely and should consider actions they can take to assure the integrity of their trailer or dolly coupling systems, with a particular focus on the tow eye fitment," NHVR chief executive Sal Petroccitto said.

The NHVR suggests testing your maintenance system to see if there is any looseness in the fitting of the drawbar. It also suggests truckers review their inspection system to see if it contains other issues such as cracks in the block or any kinks in the drawbar.

Those with heavy trailer drawbars could also consider voluntarily fitting supplementary safety chains.

When testing these items, it may also pay to ensure your tyre maintenance is up to scratch so your vehicle stays safe on the road.
