If you are looking for a place to test out your new car tyres, you may be curious to learn just where the safest roads in the country are located. These roads have now been revealed in theACT Road Safety Report Card.

This report was tabled by the Legislative Assembly by the Attorney-General, Simon Corbell on September 23. It is only the second report since the endorsement of the National Road Safety Strategy. It revealed that the number of crashes in ACT was lower than the national average. The number of road fatalities is measured per 100,000 population.

In ACT in 2013, there were 1.8 fatalities per 100,000 people. The national average was 5.2.

Mr Corbell said he was encouraged by these lower figures, but he also expressed concern that more motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users were becoming involved in car accidents.

However, the ACT Police and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate (JACS) will shortly unveil a new Share the Road campaign. No matter the size of your tyres - from cycle tyres to truck tyres - there are rights and responsibilities involved when it comes to using the road.

"In addition, JACS is developing an awareness brochure on vulnerable road users which will be included with registration renewal notices. This brochure will include information on the road rules and tips on sharing the road safely," Mr Corbell said.
