Josh Boettcher October Update

Round 6 of the Stadium Drift Australia Repco Pro Series was held Sunday 28 October at Archerfield, Brisbane.  This was the second last round of the series and after a challenging season so far, Josh was determined to make up for it.

After a few practise laps the new suspension setup on the Tyreright Sil80 was feeling great and the GT Radial HPYs were doing exactly what he needed them to.

Josh had a drawn a tough line up for his 4 random battles, but this meant he could push hard against these guys and build some momentum going into the finals.

The goal for the day was to chase as hard as possible.  In the first chase run this is exactly what Josh did and at times he was so close to the lead driver we weren't 100% sure Josh wouldn't hit him! But Tyreright's drift master was able to keep it smooth with no mistakes, only inches behind his opponent.  It gave Josh a great benchmark of how close he can go without causing any problems and he clearly kept trying to get that close through the rest of the heat battles.

After 3 heat battles, Josh was leading the points at that stage. Coming into the 4th and final battle of the heats against young Nick Coulson in his VE V8 Ute, Josh carried on with the same plan of chasing hard.

Everything was going great until the second last corner of the chase run. Josh got right up next to Nick, but wound up the car a bit too tight and his change of direction into the last corner was too fast and he spun. With the level of competition this season we were worried Josh wouldn't make it in to the top 7 and straight through to the A main final, but with the strong scores from his earlier rounds, he held on to grab 5th.

This put Josh against Ron Lange in the A Main top 8.  It was a very tight battle against Ron as he spends a lot of time at the Archerfield track, but Josh pulled off the win and moved through to the top 4.  This put him against the super hard charging Tony Harrison in his V8 Sil80.  Tony's been battling it out with Rob Whyte for the series all year and never takes it easy!

Josh chased Tony hard and was able to stay quite close.  On the chase run he worked especially hard to give Tony trouble keeping up. Afterwards Josh said that he could hear the V8 in his window, and so he knew Tony was close for most of the run.

It was only when Josh pulled up after the run that his team let him know Tony had made an error behind him and so he was through to the final battle!

Josh faced off against Nick Coulson again and he knew that he'd be able to keep close to Nick's VE ute on the tight track, but wanted to avoid making the same mistakes as he had earlier. On the first run Josh held a small advantage with Nick not quite on his door. Coming into the last corner he took care to avoid the error from the previous run and thought he might have taken the win.

The judges weren't so sure and called for one more run.

So the guys lined up and went for it again, pushing even harder than before.

Nick took the lead and ran a solid line but Josh was closer than ever before and was making no mistakes. When it came to Josh's lead run he managed to keep a little more separation, Nick not being able to stay as close as Josh had.

Breathlessly Josh and the team waited for the official announcement. And they did it! Taking out their first win for the season! It was such a welcome result after a difficult year full of hard work.

The team were sitting in 7th coming into the round, but after everything was collated from the weekend, they've moved up into 5th and are only 5 points off 3rd in the series. Unfortunately 1st and 2nd are too far ahead to be caught this year, so the fight is on for the last step of the podium. Here are the current contenders:

  • 3-Mick Rosenblatt—-74 pts
  • 4-Nick Coulson— 71 pts
  • 5-Josh Boettcher— 69 pts
  • 6-Danny Kenneally—68 pts
  • 7-Levi Clarke—60 pts

Here's what Josh says the team will need to do in order to make the podium:

"For us to earn 3rd place we need to finish ahead of all these guys, and 2 positions ahead of 'Mad' Mick Rosenblatt.   The Grand Final Round will be at Wakefield Park in Goulburn, NSW on the 10th and 11th of November.  We can't wait to fight it out!  So if you can make it, come down and see some hard fought battles!"

The final round of the Repco Series will be closely followed by the final round of the Formula Drift Asia round the week after in Jakarta!  So keep an eye out for some exciting news about these events!
