Here comes the rain - road safety tips

Do you ever feel like rolling over and going back to sleep when you wake up to the sound of rain pouring down outside?
Alas, unlike those halcyon days of youth, nowadays you must go to work and save the world, one email at a time.
First you need to get there safely, however, and if you'll be driving then it's important to take extra care on the roads.
When there is water on the road it can take longer to stop your vehicle safely. For this reason it is critical to drive at a moderate speed and to maintain safe following distances.
Try not to use your brakes too much. Where possible, slow your car simply by taking your foot off the accelerator.
Visibility on the road can become very limited during rain showers, so it is a good idea to take the extra precaution of turning your headlights on, even during the daytime.
Even in light rain, this can help improve your own visibility and also make your vehicle more easily seen by other drivers.
Don't think about rain driving for the first time when the heavens open - get prepared ahead of time!
Make sure your windscreen wiper blades are in good condition - replace these if not - and ensure your car, 4WD or truck tyres have enough tread and are in good overall shape.
