The ultimate summer roadtrip playlist
Posted by: Cal on 4/11/2013
Summer's almost here, and that means it's the perfect time to hit the road for your long-awaited holiday.
For something totally different, why not grab a group of your closest friends, leave the kids at home and hit the road for a road trip to remember?
Once you've chosen where to go, what to take and performed the basic car maintenance, including tyre safety checks, it's time to compile the ultimate summer roadtrip playlist.
Avoid squabbling by allowing all holiday participants to contribute a few of their favourite songs, and then take charge and work on your masterpiece.
For those who are looking for a little direction and inspiration, here's a selection of some of the greatest travelling songs of all time.
Highway to Hell - AC/DC
No Australian roadtrip is complete without a bit of Acca Dacca, and this song is the absolute perfect fit for cruising down highways with the windows down with your best mates at your side. Unleash your inner bogan, turn the volume way up, and get ready for a journey to remember.
Every Day is a Winding Road - Sheryl Crow
Okay, this one isn't the most critically acclaimed number, but it's bound to get all the girls singing. It lends itself to the karaoke stage as much as it does the backseat of a Holden, so learn the lyrics and make it a summer soundtrack staple!
Khe Sanh - Cold Chisel
Rumour has it you're not an Australian if you don't love Cold Chisel. Jimmy Barnes and the gang really turn up the heat in this song, and while it's not strictly a singalong (unless you've dedicated some serious time to mastering the tricky lyrics!) the beat and tune are inescapably catchy.
April Sun in Cuba - Dragon
Whether you're travelling near or far, it's always nice to imagine you're heading somewhere sunny and warm. This is a classic singalong anthem, and with lyrics like "I'm tired of the city life" it's all the more relevant in summer as you saunter off towards clear skies and hot days.
Independent Woman - Destiny's Child
You can't get better than this song. You may remember it from Charlie's Angels, or its iconic video clip, but if you want female empowerment at its finest, you can stop right here. Even if you're in a car full of married or partnered-up women, you'll all be able to identify with the messages in this hit. Plus, it's got Beyonce!
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
The entire Rumours album could feature on your playlist, but if you have to choose just one song, make it this one. Belt it out at the top of your lungs and enjoy the admiring stares of passers-by as they try and figure out whether it's you in the car, or Stevie Nicks.
No Scrubs - TLC
This is the perfect tune for anyone in the car who has recently gone through a breakup, or anyone sick of scrubs trying to holler at them (if you don't get this reference it's safe to say you should listen to this song!). It's a great R'n'B jam that ladies everywhere will be bound to sing along to as they meander through the Australian countryside.
Summer Nights - John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John
Throw in anything from the Grease soundtrack and you're onto a winner, but this one stands out as a favourite of partygoers everywhere. Aussie icon Olivia Newton-John takes the lead in this powerful duet, complete with screeching high notes and a seemingly never-ending narrative. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll walk away from your trip a different person.
