A puncture is a real pain – it always seems to happen just when you want to go somewhere.
Modern tyres are tough and hard to puncture, but sometimes a nail, screw, or glass splinter can pierce the tyre casing – air escapes, the tyre goes down. Don’t panic, and don’t drive your car, it’s not safe, and it may ruin an otherwise repairable tyre.
Your first job is to remove the flat tyre and fit your spare. You will find instructions on how to do this in your Owner’s Manual, do it safely, out of the way of any traffic.
The good news is, if the puncture is within the tread area it can usually be repaired by the experts at Tyreright in no time at all.
Walk right in, sit right down – flat tyre repair – no appointment is needed.
Bring your flat tyre to your nearest Tyreright store. Our tyre experts will take a close look at it and let you know whether it can be fixed.
We’ll fully deflate the tyre, take it off the rim and inspect the damage, checking the structure of the tyre. If it’s repairable, we’ll insert a plug from inside the tyre through the puncture to make it airtight. This normally takes about 30 minutes.
We’ll then put the repaired tyre back on the rim, do a wheel balance, and fit the wheel onto your car.
Unfortunately, not all punctures are created equal. If your tyre has received severe damage to the sidewall, the shoulder, or the tread, our technicians will advise you to replace it with a new one.
Fortunately, Tyreright has the largest range of brands in Australia, so our tyre experts can advise you on the best options for your vehicle.
Right now, you’re probably saying; can I get tyre puncture repair near me? Luckily the answer is yes; Tyreright stores are all around the country, find your nearest here.
What should I do if I have a punctured tyre?
If you realise you have a puncture – don’t drive any further, you’ll only make things worse! Turn off the road immediately, and park in a safe location away from traffic. If you’re stuck in a dangerous place, such as a motorway or on a bend, you should call an expert roadside breakdown service.
Turn off the engine and switch on your hazard warning lights, ensuring the handbrake is on and the vehicle is secure.
If you are able, change the punctured tyre for the spare. You will find instructions on how to do this in your Owner’s Manual. Remember to make sure that all passengers are well away from the vehicle.
Changing a tyre can be difficult for some. If you can’t do it, call a breakdown service.
When the spare has been fitted, resume driving at a reduced speed and find your nearest tyre retailer.
Punctures can be mild or severe depending on where the puncture is, so for your safety’s sake, the tyre repair needs to be done by an expert.

How do you fix a tyre puncture?
For safety’s sake most punctured tyres should be replaced. Flat tyre repair can be a safe option if it is carried out by a trained professional.
If your tyre can be repaired, there are three common ways it can be done:
Plugging
A plug is the simplest and fastest method. The technician uses an approved plug with a small piece of leather, coats it in rubber adhesive, and plugs the puncture with it. As you drive, the heat that is generated vulcanises the rubber adhesive and hardens it to seal the puncture.
Patching
A square patch of rubber is coated with rubber adhesive and bonded to the puncture on the inside of the tyre. As with plugging, the adhesive vulcanises during driving as the tyre heats up, and this hardens the repair.
Plug/Patch
Performing a combination plug/patch tyre repair is complicated. First a plug is inserted and glued, then a patch is bonded to the inside of the tyre at the base of the plug ‘tail.’
Whatever the method, the experts at Tyreright do all their tyre repairs in a safe and professional manner, complying with the safety standards under the Australian Standard AS 1973-1993.
What tyre punctures can be repaired?
Tyre puncture repair depends on the severity of the damage. This can only be determined once the tyre is taken off the wheel.
To ensure your safety, Tyreright will only repair a tyre if it has been punctured by a small object, like a nail, screw, or shard of glass. The hole should be 6mm or less in diameter and located in a central portion of the tread, within the central 60-70% of the tyre’s nominal tread width.
As a rule of thumb, you should not fix a puncture when it occurs on the shoulder or sidewall of the tyre, or if the hole is larger than 6mm.
There is also no point trying to fix a tyre if it is worn below 1.6mm of remaining tread depth, has run-flat damage, cracking of the rubber due to ageing, or internal damage such as separation of inner layers.
